Morley Library
Location:
Painesville, Ohio
Size:
61,000 s.f.
Construction Cost:
$9.6 million
Completion Date:
Fall 2004
Description:
The exterior design relates to the historic architecture of
downtown Painesville. Connections
to the past include reusing elements of the original library in the new
building. Leaded glass windows are not only reused, but their pattern is
the basis of design for the monumental stair railing and decorative
exterior grilles.
The tall proportions enclose a new library organized on three floors and a basement served by two oversized elevators and a dramatic monumental stair. This solution allows for doubling the size of the library and doubling the parking, all on the existing site.
